According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at approximately 4:45 a.m., a 2021 Honda Accord, driven by a 65-year-old man from Palm Bay, was traveling northbound in the center lane near mile marker 187. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Honda over-corrected to the left, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and strike the guardrail. The impact caused the Honda to rotate into the path of a 2019 BMW 330, driven by a 25-year-old man, also from Palm Bay, who was traveling in the inside lane. The BMW collided with the left side of the Honda.
The collision ejected the Honda driver into the southbound lanes of I-95, where four vehicles traveling southbound – a 2016 Hyundai Sonata, a 2020 Hyundai Sonata, a 2017 Kia Sorento, and a 2020 Hyundai Kona – struck the driver.
The 39-year-old female driver of the Kia attempted to avoid the crash by swerving, but the vehicle veered off the road and collided with a tree, causing it to overturn.
The driver of the Honda was pronounced deceased at the scene. The BMW driver and the 37-year-old male driver of the Hyundai Sonata sustained serious injuries and were transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The drivers of the other vehicles involved suffered minor or no injuries, with some being transported to local hospitals for evaluation.
The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. FHP has not released the names of those involved pending notification of next of kin.
This tragic accident caused significant delays during the morning commute, as all southbound lanes were closed for several hours while troopers conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.
