Florida’s minimum age to buy a gun will remain at 21 years old.
Bill to lower age to purchase gun filed by Sirois and Fine dies
Representative Tyler Sirois filed a bill to return the minimum age to 18 from 21. Representative Fine co-sponsored the bill in an attempt to regain support from second amendment advocates after he voted and defended in the past to raise the age. The House passed a bill (HB 1543) that would reduce the purchase age for rifles and long guns. However, no legislation was ever filed in the Senate, and time has run out on the bill finding another vehicle to reach the Senate floor with session scheduled to end tomorrow.
“The Florida bill to lower the age to 18 to buy a gun in Florida is dead! As I said from the beginning of Session,” tweeted U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, a Parkland Democrat. “The Marjory Stoneman Douglas School safety bill that I helped pass five years ago remains intact.”
Five years ago, then-Gov. Rick Scott signed a law, one sponsored by Moskowitz, that raised the age after the Parkland school shooting.
Senate President Kathleen Passidomo made said that the issue would not be revisited in the upper chamber.
“We don’t have it in the Senate,” she said. “Nobody filed it in the Senate, so there’s no bill to support.”
