A Brevard County man was arrested earlier this week after a dangerous pursuit by law enforcement, where he shockingly used two young children as human shields to evade capture. Randall Miranda, who has a history of traffic-related offenses, was arrested after a reckless chase that endangered not only his life but the lives of his children.

On the day of the arrest, Miranda failed to stop at a red light and led officers on a dangerous chase that ended in a parking lot on South Babcock St. As deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office attempted to apprehend him, Miranda hid in the backseat of his vehicle and shockingly grabbed a 4-year-old child, holding them up between himself and the deputies as a shield. A 3-year-old child was also found in the backseat during the incident.

Miranda, a habitual traffic offender, has been arrested numerous times in the past and has been convicted on multiple charges, including DUI, reckless driving, and violations of probation. This incident marks the continuation of a pattern of reckless behavior that has put public safety at risk, according to Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

“Today, we define a new term, which we will call ‘Criminal Justice Insanity,’” said Sheriff Ivey in a statement following the arrest. “Miranda not only continues to violate the law and flee from our deputies, but he also hides in the backseat of a car and uses a 4-year-old child as a human shield when our GAME OVER Task Force ordered him to show his hands and exit the vehicle!”

Authorities praised the swift actions of deputies, who safely rescued both children. Miranda was charged with multiple offenses, including child neglect with great bodily harm, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license as a habitual offender. He is currently being held without bond.
