A tragic multi-vehicle crash involving five vehicles resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries on 95 South near exit 183/Eau Gallie. The incident occurred on around 7:51am this morning, shutting down 95 in both directions for quite some time. All traffic lanes have since reopened.

The vehicles involved included a 2022 semi-truck with a trailer (V1), a 2024 Hyundai Elantra (V2), a 2022 Ford Explorer (V3), a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis (V4), and a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan (V5).

V1 (2022 KENWORTH SEMI-TRACTOR WITH TRAILER) WAS TRAVELING SOUTHBOUND ON I-95 IN THE AREA OF MILE MARKER 183 IN THE OUTSIDE LANE. V2 (2024 HYUNDAI ELANTRA), V3 (2022 FORD EXPLORER), V4 (2003 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS), AND V5 (2017 VOLKSWAGEN TIGUAN) WERE ALL STOPPED IN THE SOUTHBOUND OUTSIDE LANE OF I-95 AHEAD OF V1.
V1 DRIVER FAILED TO STOP FOR V2 STOPPED AHEAD. V1 DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO SWERVE TO THE LEFT AND STRUCK THE REAR OF V2. THIS IMPACT CAUSED V1 AND V2 TO CROSS THE SOUTHBOUND LANES. V2 THEN STRUCK THE INSIDE SHOULDER GUARDRAIL AND BECAME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE INITIAL IMPACT BETWEEN V1 AND V2 CAUSED A CHAIN REACTION CRASH BETWEEN V3, V4, AND V5. V1 DRIVER WAS NOT TRANSPORTED AND REMAINED ON-SCENE. V2 DRIVER WAS PRONOUNCED DECEASED ON-SCENE. V3 DRIVER, V3 PASSENGER, V4 DRIVER, AND V5 DRIVER WERE TRANSPORTED TO LOCAL HOSPITALS WITH MINOR INJURIES. THE CRASH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

Details of Those Involved:

  • V1 Driver: A 23-year-old male from Kernersville, North Carolina, who was uninjured and did not require medical transport.
  • V2 Driver: 22-year-old make from Melbourne. Pending identification, the driver of the Hyundai Elantra was tragically pronounced deceased at the scene after his vehicle caught fire.
  • V3 Occupants: The driver, a 44-year-old male from Cocoa, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Viera Hospital. A 14-year-old passenger also sustained minor injuries and was treated at the same hospital.
  • V4 Driver: A 33-year-old male from Cocoa suffered minor injuries and was taken to Melbourne Regional Hospital for treatment.
  • V5 Driver: A 44-year-old male from Cocoa also sustained minor injuries and was transported to Melbourne Regional Hospital.

The identity of the deceased driver is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. No additional information about the circumstances of the crash has been released at this time.
